WITHOUT YOU - MARIAH CAREY

How to improve your listening in English

MARIAH CAREY – “WITHOUT YOU”

=====================================================

LYRICS

No I can't forget this evening or your face as you were leaving

But I guess that's just the way the story goes

You always smile, but in your eyes

Your sorrow shows Yes, it shows

No I can't forget tomorrow When I think of all my sorrow

When I had you there but then I let you go

And now it's only fair that I should let you know

What you should know

I can't live If living is without you I can't live I can't give anymore

I can't live If living is without you I can't give I can't give anymore

Well, I can't forget this evening or your face as you were leaving

But I guess that's just the way the story goes

You always smile, but in your eyes

Your sorrow shows Yes, it shows

I can't live If living is without you I can't live I can't give anymore

I can't live If living is without you I can't give I can't give anymore

=====================================================

- It is a very beautiful song but at the same time a very romantic one. If you listen to the song carefully, paying special attention to the lyrics, it is a very sad song. We have many examples in the song to demonstrate the sadness as she sings:

-        “You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows”

“No, I can't  forget tomorrow, when I think of all my sorrow”

-        “I can't  live If living is without you”

“When I had you there but then I let you go”

=====================================================

-       The song “Without you” is without any doubts a classical in pop/rock music. Originally it was sung by Badfinger, but who made it famous forever was Harry Nilson at the beginning of the seventies.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE SONG

-       This song is apparently the end of a love relationship, a fight. The lyrics go deeper than this. It is about a farewell in a broader sense, not exactly a couple, but a loving relative, a friend, a father or mother, a brother or sister and so on. Even it could be a separation out of the worldly, a death. The lyrics of “Without you” can mean so many things that I leave it open to your own imagination.

Pronunciation

7.      El grupo consonántico “t y” en  “without you”, “let you”. En ambos casos SE UNEN AMBAS, CONSONANTE Y SEMIVOCAL Y TIENEN UN SONIDO MUY PARECIDO A “CHU” CASTELLANO.

8.      “Sh” en “should, show”.

9.      ANYMORE. Al ser la frase negativa se usará ANY, si fuese positiva se usaría “some”.

1.      GUESS: Think, suppose, imagine, reckon. Estimate or conclude (something) without sufficient information to be sure of being correct.

2.      SORROW: Suffer. A feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune suffered by oneself or others.

3.      FAIR: just or appropriate in the circumstances.

=====================================================

4. Grammar

-      CAN´T:

can´t forget ...              can´t live…    can´t give…

`They can´t open the window now´.

´She can speak English very well indeed`.

Lo misma situación ocurre con “MUST” nunca usaremos “to” después de este modal:

´I must study hard this weekend`.

´You  mustn´t visit her tonight`.

-      AS = WHEN

-      You were leaving = Past continuous.

-      THINK OF / THINK ABOUT = ´have in one´s mind´.

-      Examples:

-      Mary teaches French in the mornings.

-      Jack sings beautifully.

-      She does everything at the right time.

-      Iberia flies to New York every day.

-      Martha speaks English as well as a native speaker.

-      The plane leaves at 6 tomorrow morning.

-       Butter melts if you don´t put it in the fridge.

She is the only artist since The Beatles to have so many number 1 singles and albums. With "Heartbreaker", the first single from her 1999 album Rainbow and also her 14 number 1 single, she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and with "Heartbreaker" at its 60th week atop the Billboard's charts, she pushed ahead of The Beatles's 59-week record as the only artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. "We Belong Together" from her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi became her 16th number 1 single and was also her first number 1 without any guest artists since her song "My All" (also a number 1 single) captured the top spot in May 1998.
