The Story of the Show

The London production of Billy Elliot is a musical adaptation of the smash hit BAFTA award-winning film of the same name, telling the inspirational story of one young boy’s struggle to attain his dream despite the barriers erected by his background and community. Set against the backdrop of the 1984-85 miners’ strikes in County Durham, the musical focuses on Billy, a normal boy from a working-class background who is unable to find any fulfilment in his boxing classes despite his miner father’s wishes. However, when Billy accidentally discovers ballet and an encouraging teacher, Mrs Wilkinson, it ignites a passion for dance that is to take him from backroom ballet practice to London audition rooms.

Billy Elliot is a moving portrayal of a boy’s fight against the odds to achieve his ambitions outside of the constraints of his community, and it carries an empowering message about being unafraid to express yourself and the importance of creating an atmosphere where anybody can feel accepted. In addition to the heartfelt themes at its core, the musical contains some awe-inspiring choreography by the renowned Peter Darling and an original score by Elton John, with book and lyrics by Lee Hall. Stephen Daldry, the director of the film version of the story, is also on board for the stage production.

Reception

Since opening to London audiences in 2005 the show has been a runaway success, inspiring praise from both the critics and the public and winning a string of theatre awards including the Olivier Award, Evening Standard Award, Theatregoers’ Choice Award and Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical. Billy Elliot can now be seen all over the world, including in Canada, Australia and on Broadway. The overwhelming popularity of the show seems to show no signs of disappearing in the near future, having recently extended its run to December 2013 and playing to packed audiences every night at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

London Performances

If you are interested to see this spectacular show for yourself, performances of Billy Elliot in London currently take place every evening between Monday and Saturday at 7.30pm, with an additional matinee performance on both Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm. The production is approximately 3 hours long with one interval, and tickets are available at the box office and online.
