After thinking carefully for some days the pros and cons and the length of this entry I decided to make ABBA 1 shorter and start a new ABBA 2 which makes it more comfortable to look it up. ABBA has so many beautiful songs that it was almost impossible for me to choose the most popular ones and leave out the rest of the songs. 

I would like to hear some of your opinions but unfortunately nobody says anything, it is a pity but I can´t help at all. Thank you very much for following me.

12 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ABBA

ABBA was one of the most successful singing bands of the early 70s to the early 80s and everyone who were born in the 70s could well recall the success of this singing group judging from their songs which became eternal classics.

ABBA was one of the most successful singing bands of the early 70s to the early 80s composed mainly of two Swedish singing couples, whose given names make up the acronym name for the group; Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. I suppose everyone from ages 40 up could very well recall their past listening to ABBA songs and for those aged below 40, they couldn’t help but appreciate the great song classics left by ABBA.

    1.  The fusion of two singers-songwriters which was considered the vital part of ABBA happened on a crossroad, at the countryside. The bus with Benny’s group, the Hep Stars and the Hootenanny Singers with Bjorn met up on the way to a concert/party.

    2.  Agnetha was a self-confessed Connie Francis fan and used to sing and imitate her moves.

    3.   Anni-Frid Lyngstad was Norwegian by birth fathered by a German soldier who was on assignment at Norway when he met Anni’s mother which sprouted a relationship.

    4.   Ring Ring was ABBA’s first debut album released in 1973 but their phenomenal song which introduced them to the world was the song Waterloo which they performed in 6 April 1974 at Eurovision held in Brighton, a city on the southern coast of England towards the east.

    5.   Winning the 1974 Eurovision could have been Agnetha’s best birthday gift which arrived a day late. She was born on 5^thApril (1950).

    6.   Eurovision just made things happen faster for ABBA considering certain parts of the world were less interested in it (US and Australia). Note that their first debut album Ring Ring released a year before Eurovision initially met success.

    7.   Agnetha turned away from the public as an after effect of fame after the ABBA split up  causing her to be treated badly by journalists. Staying away from fans and declining interviews earned her the title, “the new Greta Garbo”.

    8.   The distinguishing feature of ABBA’s music was made possible through the genius of audio engineer Michael Tretow who experimented with various recording techniques.

    9.   The Day Before You Came was the last ABBA song as attested by ABBA’s audio engineer Michael Tretow.

    10.  ABBA’s second reunion in public after their split up happened after 22 years at the Swedish premier of the film “Mamma Mia” in 4 July 2008.

     11. As it was expressed in Bjorn’s very own words; “ ABBA never officially broke up. In 1982, we just said we were going to have a rest and that was it.”

     12. “Mamma Mia!”, the musical project Bjorn and Benny had in mind was the very cause of the break from ABBA which eventually led to it’s end. The origin of the phrase is Italian which means “my mother” oftentimes an exclamation or cry of distress owing to danger or being shocked. For ABBA, the shock from the parting came quite a bit late.

Rock/Pop supergroup ABBA was formed in 1972 in Stockholm, Sweden and featured members Agnetha Faltskog, Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They smashed charts worldwide for 10 years with hits such as ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Waterloo’ (with which they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest), toured the world and sold an amazing 370 million records. ABBA sounded amazing but also looked unique; thanks to the unusual visual symmetry of its two male and two female members and their distinctive fashions, which included flared white trousers and dungarees combined with facial hair for Benny and Bjorn and classic screen printed belted disco mini dresses and white platform boots for Agnetha and Anni-Frid. If you’re still thanking for there music after all these years and are thinking of throwing an ABBA fancy dress party.

WHAT´S IN A NAME?

The group’s name ABBA is of course an acronym created from the Christian names of all four members. However, the name is also a palindrome and in 1975 their song ‘SOS’ became the first smash hit single with a palindromic title also performed by a group with a palindromic name! ‘Ali Baba’, ‘FABB’ and ‘Baba’ were early contenders for potential names but ABBA was the final famous choice. Furthermore, Abba is also the name of a renowned fish-canning firm in Sweden!

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMIY

During the band’s heyday, Agnetha and Bjorn were a married couple, as were Benny and Anna-Frid , although the former marriage ended in 1979 and the latter in 1981. However, the band carried on for another two years before dissolving and their hit ‘The Winner Takes It All’ is said to have been inspired by the marital strife between Agnetha and Bjorn.

RECORD BREAKERS

ABBA is the second most successful group in the history of recorded music behind The Beatles, with sales of 370 million records and they continue to sell millions of recordings every year despite having dissolved almost thirty years ago. Throughout their career they created 18 albums, had 10 number 1 albums in the UK and 9 number 1 UK singles.

MUSIC VIDEO PIONEERS

ABBA capitalised on their natural good looks, contemporary fashion sense and striking visual appeal by being one of the first groups to use promotional videos to market their music. Those who remember the ABBA videos which featured famous screen shots with one member facing the camera and another in profile might be interested to know that they were directed by Lasse Halstrom, who later directed the acclaimed movies ‘The Cider House Rules’ and ‘Chocolat’.

MAMA MIA!

The musical ‘Mama Mia’ which is based on ABBA songs, was written and produced by Benny and Bjorn, premiered in 1999 and has been staged in 1500 Broadway performances to date as well as touring the globe. In February 2005 all four members of the group reunited for the first time since they dissolved in 1983, for the gala performance of ‘Mama Mia’ in Stockholm. The ‘Mama Mia’ movie was released in 2008. It became the third highest grossing musical film ever in the United States and the highest ever grossing musical film in the world.

BJORN AND BENNY AFTER ABBA

Bjorn and Benny also wrote the music for the West End show ‘Chess’ which was premiered in 1984 and ran for three years in London. They also co-wrote ‘Kristina fran Duvemala’ in 1995, which is a musical production based on a Swedish novel by Vilhelm Moberg. The pair received a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for services to song-writing in 2001 and continue to work together on various projects.

AGNETHA AND ANNI-FRID AFTER ABBA

Anni-Frid released her first solo album, ‘Something’s Going On’ in 1982 and it spawned the hit single ‘I Know There’s Something Going On’. However, her second solo album, 1984’s ‘Shine’ was not nearly as successful and she retired until 1996. Meanwhile, Agnetha released her first solo album, ‘Wrap Your Arms Around Me’ in 1983 which featured the smash hit single ‘The Heat Is On’ and the Long Player sold 1.2 million copies around the globe. She released ‘Eyes of a Woman’ in 1985, which enjoyed considerable European success, but retired in 1987 after releasing the album ‘I Stand Alone’ , not to return to the public sphere until 2004, when she released an album of cover versions entitled ‘My Colouring Book’ that was successful in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

ABBAWORLD

In 2009 the ABBAWORLD exhibition began touring several cities around the globe and featured multiple rooms of behind the scenes footage, music and memorabilia connected to the famous four-piece band. A 3 D hologram installation even allowed fans to sing alongside their musical heroes as well as making guest appearances in music videos and on album covers!

AGNETHA: UNHERALDED MUSICAL PRODIGY!

Agnetha was a successful solo performer in Sweden before the days of ABBA and had a series of self-penned hits as a teenager as well as starring in a professional Swedish production of the musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. She met Bjorn when he was performing with his first band ‘The Hootenanny Singers’ on the Swedish ‘folkpark’ circuit and the couple’s marriage in 1971 was a celebrated celebrity affair in their native Sweden.

ANNI-FRID: THE NON-SWEDE

Anni-Frid is the only ABBA member to be born outside Sweden. Her birthplace is actually Narvik in Norway. Synni,Anni mother died when Anni Frid was only 2 years old but she was raised in Sweden by her grandmother and later met Benny Andersson on the ‘folkpark’ circuit. Benny subsequently invited her to sing vocals with his friend Bjorn’s girlfriend Agnetha and of course, the rest is musical history!
